Real Hip-Hop of America

When many people think of hip-hop, they think about rap music today so centered around drugs, violence and women. Many fail to realize that the art form was created for good times. The originators of the movement were all for having a good time and partying. In films such as Brown Sugar, which depicts the relationship between friends and their love of hip-hop, and Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, which shows the unity amongst artists as well as fans, hip-hop is shown as a catalyst to bring people together.

Considering everything going on in the world today, it is important for us to keep the original ideas of hip-hop alive. Artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Sampha and Tech N9ne make sure to keep the essence of hip-hop alive. Recently K-Dot released his new video for “i” and this visual is the epitome of hip-hop; Embracing the culture, speaking what’s real and enjoying life with all of its twists and turns. Hip-hop music was meant to make people feel good. Songs like “i” are especially needed today because the meaning of hip-hop has been lost. Between the commercialism of most music and artists, the industry is drowning in a sea of mediocrity and we need saving.

Thankfully, there are artists who are taking it back to the days of Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. We are in social turmoil just as they were and these upbeat songs of unity and comradery are essential to stay sane. It is important to support artists who produce authentic hip-hop music. Not only is it important for unity amongst people of every background but it is imperative for the youth of the world to know what REAL hip-hop music is so the legacy can continue for generations to come.
