Dope Fashion: Can We Get Great Designers to Multiply? (@asvpxrocky vs @_HoodByAir_ @beentrill )

Thank You Pretty Flacko. In A$AP Rocky’s newest song “Multiply” the trendsetting rapper called out street wear brands Been Trill and Hood By Air. He is reminding these brands who is really the tastemaker, using a sample from Three 6 Mafia’s classic “Still Fly” and with lines like “HBA s*** weak you can keep that” and “I ain’t really f****** with that Been Trill, swear that s*** is booty like Tip Drill/ And I ain’t really into throwing shots, but these motherf****** better gimme my props” he sugarcoats nothing and makes it very apparent of his intentions.

When A$AP Mob gained popularity in 2011, Rocky brought along a whole shift in the music, fashion and the street scene. He brought a Southern feel to Northern rap, brought back gold teeth, he influenced boys and men to be more conscious about what they have on and addressing himself as a “Pretty MotherF*****” putting himself in the trophy spectrum of a relationship. He also made it very cool for kids with money to be gangsters on Tumblr, which has in turn influence the incoming generations to take a Northern approach to fashion. He’s helped everyone desire to be more polished, as well as created a million carbon copies of himself via the Internet.

Yesterday, not even 24 hours after Rocky dropped his new song he received a response from Been Trill’s designer, Heron Preston, on Instagram,
What happened to rapper on rapper beef? the days of biggie vs tupac & jay z vs nas are over. Remember how Nas's "Ether" or Tupac "Hit Em Up" made you feel? Remember what that meant for rap music? The fact that a rapper dissed a clothing company is a huge sign of the times. does that mean rap is boring? has rap lost it's edge? Today, power in music is style. power is fashion. Let's keep this shit shocking and competitive! this is how you push things forward. and the song/video is good. let's continue to shake shit up! our culture needs it
I do not think Mr. Preston got the message Rocky was trying to send. He wants his props! And he deserves them, he literally put these brands on and they fail to acknowledge it.  Rocky made light of the whole emo fashion scene that Been Trill is capitalizing from, as well as helped people just be more mindful of fashion period with songs like “Fashion Killer” and “Goldie”. I think he is also challenging them to do better; telling them their designs are weak is very accurate they just screen print (as you can see the fast acting Preston headed to his printer and had another shirt mad), which I hope trickles down to some smaller brands.

This beef seems warranted, Rocky is a fashionable rapper and his style was his claim to fame, he’s being true to himself. Let’s not act like rappers haven’t went after brands before Cristal, Tommy Hilfiger, and Kanye West’s interview tour about the designers who were trying to blackball him from the high fashion scene. These rappers just want credit where credit is due. Wouldn’t you want the same?
