KeithCharles Spacebar (@_Spacebar) - "Abernathy Ross" dir. by the Bach Agency [watch]
Despite your personal opinions about Quentin Tarantino, to deny that he makes some of the best damn films in cinematic history would just be plain asinine. His films aren't just films; they're events--must see events, and I've been privy to almost all of his events except one:
Death Proof.
I've never seen Grindhouse: Death Proof, so when I read that rapper/producer KeithCharles Spacebar's latest video was inspired by Rosario Dawson's character in Tarantino's film, I knew that I wouldn't be able to fully appreciate the video's artistic intent as a Tarantino fan.
However, as both a rap fan and a cinephile, what I was able to enjoy was the cinematography, which takes a stylistically minimalist approach to the Tampa-born ATLien's fury-filled verses.
Though the premise is relatively simple, it's the attention to minutiae that becomes the star of the video: the symmetrical lines of the bleachers and the fence; the tracking shot of the model's legs that leads to Spacebar; the jump cuts; the endearing subliminal message at 1:32.
Directed by Kobi Ansong and shot by Morian Thomas of The Bach Agency, the monochromatic video is both a great addition to their portfolio and a great introduction to KeithCharles Spacebar's work (stream his Howto [COUNT] EP here). Also, keep an eye out for Charles' upcoming Keep Count EP. Shout out to Awful Records.
Maybe I should go watch Death Proof now...
Matthieu Black may be the only Quentin Tarantino fan that has never seen Death Proof. Follow him at @iTravelinDenim and give him a hard time about it.
