Over the weekend, Lil Wayne dropped the fifth installment in the Dedication series with the help of DJ Drama. While I'm biased as a longtime fan of the rapper, I must admit that he has fallen off a bit and he himself know this.Weezy realized his absence at the VMA's and BET Awards.
"I apologize to my fans and promise 2 work harder if it kills me"
Dedication 5, completed in just a week, is a refreshing compilation compared to previous projects the rapper has released in the past few years. You can tell a distinct difference in his effort, but it keeps with the same themes of pussy, money, and weed. I mean, what else would Lil Wayne rap about?
Mixtape Weezy raps over the hottest beats of the year including "Black Skinheads", "Type of Way", and "Started From The Bottom". He calls in features from The Weeknd, T.I, and Birdman. "You Song" includes a unique collaboration with aid from newcomer Chance the Rapper. It's a stand out track on the mixtape with Chance bringing his unique, yet poetic flow."You fine as two grapes gettin' stomped out by a giant cast," raps the Chicago emcee. Chance's overshadows Wayne a bit, but Weezy doesn't disappoint. The two complement one another. Lil Wayne shows that he has versatility by spitting a choppy flow on "Levels" and is reminiscent of his Hot Boyz days with "Thinking About You". The mixtape received over 500,000 in a little over 24 hours on Datpiff.com.
The mixtape has been welecomed with mixed reviews. I, however, find the tape complete and well delivered. The rapper said he's going the wok harder and proves it with the project.
