It's been a dry movie season this year, but that is starting to change. The summer season is off to a good start with the success of both Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby.
"We positioned the film as counterprogramming for the lucrative summer playtime and weave our way through the steam of fanboy tentpoles to a long successful run at the box office," said Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman. "Star Trek opens next weekend ans that certainly isn't our audience."
The Great Gatsby beat expectations by earning $51.1 million in it's debut, yet it wasn't enough to be number 1. Iron Man 3 earned a total of $72.5 million domestically after dominating overseas, scoring the top spot. The Great Gatsby is director, Baz Luhrmann's best opening to date. Leonardo DiCaprio shines as the lead of Jay Gatsby, and stars opposite of Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton.
