Kik Messager Gaining Popularity Over Facebook
It seems like everyone is hopping on the Kik bandwagon nowadays. According to TechCrunch, the Waterloo-based company recently announced that they reached over 50 million registered users and is adding new ones a a rate of 200,000 per day. Kik's growth has nearly doubled, but could be halted with the launch of Facebook's Facebook Home for Android.
Kik CEO Ted Livingston admits that there are a few distinct similarities between Kik and Facebook. "Messaging is at the center, and so fundamentally you're trying to build a platform around it," said Livingston in response to the new tech wave in messaging. "Do you do that by trying to put messaging on top of everything, or by putting everything inside the messenger? It's a similar problem, but a very different solution."
You may have noticed that Facebook isn't used as often anymore. A recent survey showed that Facebook was losing it's popularity among teens who were now turning to sites such as Vine, SnapChat, and Kik, according to Piper Jaffray.
Kik is updating its iOS and Android mobile applications on Thursday to version 6.3 that aids in it's continued growth among users. The new version has push notifications that notify users when they have a new message while in process of using the app. Could Kik become the new Facebook?
