Financial aid : revisited

Blast from the past - January 11, 2012

A new semester means a new hassle with the financial aid office. This is never fun, but necessary to get the aid you need for school. By now, you should have started filling out your FAFSA. Remember, you can insert estimates and correct them once you have the accurate information.

A visit to the financial aid office can be relatively easy. The financial aid office is the place to get information on aid, employment programs, scholarships, deadlines and more. Think of them more like friends than enemies  You should have a relationship with your financial aid officer; this will be very beneficial to you. Here are some tips on how to, well, just deal and hopefully make the trip a little easier.

       1. Call ahead. It’s always best to set an appointment with the office before walking in. They are more than likely willing to help you if you have an appointment. Be on time as well.

        2. Have all information on hand. Whether it’s tax information, receipts, print off of your account, whatever. Be sure to come prepared.

    3. Write down all the questions you need to ask. Sometimes a phone call or email is the best way to contact your aid officer, and easier. You want to make sure to get all your answers questioned so you can move forward accordingly.

 4. Be courteous. These people have the power of how much money to give you. Be nice.

    5.  Meet all deadlines! If you miss the deadline, it’s going to be harder to get the funds or assistance you need.

  6. Say Thank You. A thank you card is a great way to show your appreciation and build on the relationship.
Share your financial aid experience. Was it easy? Difficult? Don't be shy, leave a comment below!

Dopefully,
Shanika
