Too many seniors come to the harsh reality that they may not being able to walk across the stage. Not because of academics, or lack of drive, but because they simply do not have the money. Exhausting all options, from loans to financial aid to personal income, it can become a struggle to scrap up those last few dollars, many postponing their graduation plans.
Mea Boykins, a 2011 Spelman graduate, decided to do something about this trend. Boykins began the Student Emergency Assistance Scholarship, or Sea, in her sophomore year. S.E.A. began to raise money for a scholarship fund for juniors and seniors at Spelman College who needed a last minute resort for paying off balances for school. Reciepients of the scholarships have been able to fulfill their graduation dreams.
S.E.A is also used as a platform to give back to the community. The organization is planning a donation drive in London called the International Youth Empowerment Event. The event will be held on March 9, 2013, calling for donations of school supplies, backpacks, and other useful items to the youth of the London community.
