The Hidden Costs of Attending College

We all know college is expensive and tuition seems to rise every year! But did you know about the hidden costs of attending college? Tuition is the only amount many focus on and forget about the expenses of just living the college life. According to the College Board's Trends in College Pricing report from 2011 to 2012, tuition and fees only accounted for 38% of the total expense budget for in-state students enrolled in a public four-year institiution.

Since the Holidays are right around the corner, this is the perfect time to take a look at your finances and reevaluate the costs of attending college. Do the benefits of career placement, resume building, internships and class experience outweigh the high costs to attend a credible school? Don't get me wrong, I'm all about furthering education, but I want everyone to be knowledgeable on finances and living on a college student's budget. Here a few things to consider in your budget for next semester:

  • Books: textbooks can range from anywhere from $10 to $200 and even more depending on the class. This should be considered when you plan on ways to finance your education. Buying used books or renting can save some money and remember to see if your library has a copy!
  • Parking/Transportation: Don't forget to consider how you will get to school when you fix your budget, and parking fees. Most schools charge hundreds of dollars for a parking pass for your car or vehicle and public trans can add up if you're not careful. Try parking nearby and get a monthly public trans pass from your university.
  • Social Life: we all know you're going to spend money on having a good time so consider that as well! This can include trips to the movies, parties  food, vices, whatever. Looks towards getting student discounts and do some research on FREE events around campus and the city. Group rates are cheaper, so plan large trips to receive mega discounts.
  • Greek life: if you're interested in joining a sorority or fraternity consider the costs. Dues are expensive and not to mention purchasing clothing for special events. It can add up.
  • Electronics: most students like to keep up with the latest in gadgets and this can be a penny pitcher as well. Try buying these items used or online on sites such as Amazon or eBay.
These are just a few hidden costs to attend college not to mention food, clothing, shipping your items if you're from out of state. But, don't worry, there are many ways to save in these areas and many can be sacrificed. Do you really have to be at every party? College is about having fun, so enjoy yourself, but protect your wallet.

Dopefully,
