Busy Student's Guide to Managing Money

So, you're in college and somehow trying to fit a personal life into an academic one. I get it, you're busy. Too busy to your finances. Trust me, I'm guilty of it too. I often buy food instead of cooking because I don't have the time. Or not pay attention to how many times I've swiped my card because there's so much more on my cranium. Here's a few tips to help you manage your money on the go:

  • Mobile Apps - you're on your phone anyways, why not use it to help you keep track of your money. There's apps such as iSpending and LearnVest allows you to enter new transactions or income. Every time you make a purchase, enter it into the app and you'll be shocked as how quick your money goes. Be sure to download your bank's app to keep track of your balance and pay bills while you ride the bus. I do!
  • Prepare meals: fixing large meals and carrying Tupperware will save you money on buying food. It's not too nerdy to carry a lunch bag with you.
  • Cards: Don't carry all of your forms of money. Carry cash instead of your card to keep better track with how much money you spend. It can be so easy to swipe your card and not know your balance.
  • Autopay: set up autopay for your bills such as phone or Internet. Your bill will be paid without you having to worry about calling or sending a check in the mail. Plus, it saves the trees!
Being a student, you're always on the go with meetings, class, work, and trying to fit in some fun. Managing your money can be the last thing on your mind and by using these tips it can come with ease. Using your phone can help you tremendously. I mean you're going to tweet anyways. *cough* follow me @carpeNIKA *cough*. Don't let your money slip from your fingers.

Dopefully,
Shanika
