Companies put a lot of money toward promotions and marketing. This can include freebies, swags, and giveaways! The cool part is that most of these companies seek college students because they have the most influence on consumers. One of the biggest ways college students can take advantage is by participating in the countless referral programs!
What's a referral program? It's simple, sign people up to start a new service with a company, and they'll give you a percentage! We do it everyday anyways by tweeting when you get a new outfit, or Instagraming your new manicure. Now you can do this and make some money too! Here's a few tips on how:
1. What do you love? Think of all of the services you use (phone, apartment, shopping). Would you refer them to a friend? Most of the common things you love offer a referral program. Everyone is looking for new customers, and just by spreading the word, you can get a piece of the profit. For example, if you just moved into an apartment and can't stop talking about it, make sure your friend who moves in next puts you down as a reference. You can knock off a few hundred dollars on your rent!
2. Sharing and Social media. Word of mouth is great, but everyone is sharing the new things in their life with the click of a button. By sharing on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, you're basically giving a company free promotion. They love that! Make a small profit by letting your friends know your reference ID or to put your name down!
3. Affiliate programs. Companies also have affiliate programs where you can work as an unofficial employee by signing people up to join. For every completed registration, you can get a small commission. Advertise on your blog, or put your link on other social media outlets. This is all about the time you put in to it, but it's a great way to make some side cash as well!
4. Do it your way! Know of a small business or new company? Let them know how you can bring them some new customers for exchange for services or a small commission. Businesses are always looking for new customers and trust the influence of college students on their friends. Having a good following on Facebook or Twitter can help you out as well.
Try referring a friend next time you fall in love with a new product or service. A company will surely reward you for bringing in any new business. Especially in this economy!
