What does this mean for you? Under the Affordable Care Act, you may be eligible to join or remain on your parent's health insurance. Even if you are in school, married, or employed, you may still be eligible. Reach out to your parents to see if you are able to join or remain on their plan. The only exception is if your parents have an existing job based plan or if your job offers an insurance program. There are also other options for young adults:
- Beginning in 2004, if you are unemployed with a limited income of $15,000 you may qualify for Medicaid.
- If your employer doesn't offer health insurance, you will be eligible to buy insurance directly in an Affordable Insurance Exchange. An Exchange is an insurance marketplace where you can find the best match for you at the best price.
- If your income is less than $43,000 and your job doesn't offer health insurance, you may qualify for tax credits to help you pay for insurance.
Emergencies happen all the time and it is important that as a student, you are taken care of. Keep your insurance card with you at all times, as well as your ID. Get the facts on what your insurance covers for you. Schools offer insurance as well, but are often limited. Talk with your parents about joining their plan and you may be able to cut the cost of your tuition!
