During the summer a lot of us are running around finding money for the new semester. If you're lucky, you are financially enrolled, unfortunately, there are a few students who still seek financial assistance. How many of us have friends who have not returned for the new year because of lack of money? The cost of tuition rises every year while the amount of aid becomes smaller. There are so many of us in this situation. Here are a few tips to help you on your hunt for cash:
1. Start early. The sooner the better. It is important to meet all of the deadlines for scholarships, FAFSA, and grants. They are usually based on a first come, first serve basis.
2. Search online. Use websites such as Fastweb and Scholarships.com to find scholarships and grants you qualify for. Simply fill out a profile and apply for the scholarships that you fit the criteria for.
3. Ask local organizations. Send out letters to churches and organizations in your hometown. Many organizations give out scholarships to students in their community as part of their community service efforts. Send out letters explaining your situation. Be sure to include your aspirations and how you are doing in school.
4. Borrow as little as possible. Private loans should be your last option and only used to get the amount you lack. Remember, you have to pay this back with interest.
A higher education should not be a sentence to debt. There are many options out there for students wanting to further their education; Scholarships, grants, contributions. Seek help from your community and alum of your school. The money is out there, you just have to find it.
