Today I ventured to Perimeter Mall to search for a second job. As I roamed the mall, I realized I haven't been shopping for clothes in forever! I was like a kid in a toy store ..then I looked at the prices. It's like retailers just slab a price on an item and wish for the best. $100 for some shoes? Not on this college budget.
Attending an all girl school such as Spelman, I am constantly surrounded by so many young women with unique styles. I swear, I just want to raid some closets of my Spelman Sisters. How do they look so cute on a student's budget? One answer is THRIFTING! I recently became obsessed with thrift stores such as the Goodwill and the Salvation Army. The vintage look is coming back at a unexpected rate from oversize sweaters, vests, multicolored blouses and more. It looks like everyone has adopted their mom's old clothing. I always find great items for under $5. Especially with their half off deals. Check out your local thrift store, yard sales, consignment shops and more. Also, some places may take your old clothes for money! You never know what you'll find, remember, one man's trash is another man's treasure :)
Secondly, recycled fashion is a cool new trend perfect for the college fashionista! I recently spent a day bleaching and dying old jeans I got for $2 at the local thrift store. Before you throw away an old item, take a look at it in a different way. Turn your sweater into a bag, or old jeans into some cool shorts. Don't be shy with the bleach and branch out and try fabric dye - only $3 at WalMart. You don't have to be a pro seamstress to try something new. Check out this cool blog for cool ideas on recycled fashion. You never know, you could be an expert and have people asking you to do it for their clothes. Sites such as etsy.com allows you to sell your vintage or created items online!
