Time to get a little personal (I hope you don't mind). Last night, I was up until 4:30 am stressing about, you guessed it, money. Although I just got this new job that will be weekly, I will not see the benefits of it for a few weeks. Sadly, bills are due now. I worked really hard last year paying off my debt of a bad credit card and overdue bill from my eviction. Still, I have to continue to work hard at gaining control of my finances and spending more wisely. I want to be at the point where I am completely independent and able to give to my family like they have given to me in my time of need. I understand that this won't happen over night, but it doesn't stop the bill collectors from calling. I don't want to drag you all down with complaining, but to say that I'm ready to take this journey to financial freedom. No longer will money have control over me, I will be the one in control; supporting myself.
This summer I'm working on paying off my debt, starting a savings account, learning of new investments for the near future, and building my companies Pink Planes and Social You. In the book, 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, Suze Orman asks the reader what are their financial goals. Whether it's to be debt free, retire early, or invest in new opportunities, we each have something we want to accomplish with money. I'm sure we would all say being rich, but more specifically, what are your goals. I hope to not only be able to support myself and pay ALL of my bills on a timely matter, I want to be able to pay for my final year at Spelman College as well as begin paying off my student loans. I realize that this is a huge goal, but it is something that is very important to me. I feel as though I have finally reached the age where I shouldn't have to run to mommy and daddy to give me money. Especially with the vast information available about money management and the ability to create income. It's going to be tough, but I'm a tough girl.
What are your financial goals? Do you plan on saving a certain amount this summer, or pay off some debt? Share with me. Leave a comment below or mention me on Twitter @carpeNIKA. I know it's not easy to share your money worries, but understand that there are many in the same boat as you. Broke College Students Unite, eh? Let's all take this journey to financial freedom by writing out our goals.
Signed,
A (stressed) Broke College Student
