Growing up leads to more responsibility, one being the management of finances. I want to use this blog as an aid for a college student, offering advice, tips, and suggestions on how to properly handle finances. An important topic is bills. I know we all hate them, me specifically. It's a hard concept to grasp that one has to actually pay to ..well, live. It sucks, but it's a part of life. As being college students, having a phone is very important. To keeping in contact with family at home, to using a phone as an alarm clock. So, its always important to keep up with a phone bill. Here are some tips to help you keep up!
1. Only get what you will use. When deciding on a plan, be sure to only include what you need. You don't need to pay for things that aren't going to be used each month.
2. Ask to see if there is a student discount. Many companies are aligned with colleges and universities and will offer discounts for students. It never hurts to ask!
3. Try a family plan. Your bill will be cheaper with the more people added on a line. The trick with that is actually having trustworthy people on your line. Consider joining a friend or family member to save some money each month.
4. Consider pre-paid ..or a not so flashy phone. Sometimes its best to stick to the basics. If you can't afford a smart phone, don't get it. Always stay within your means to avoid service disconnection.
5. Try Craigslist. BUT, if you absolutely need a smart phone, check out sites like Craigslist and Ebay to find good prices on phones. A lot of times you will find a new or barely used smart phone for a fraction of the price. Just be careful with dealing with such sites to avoid scams.
6. Pay on time. Set up auto pay or keep reminders in order to avoid disconnection or late fees. It costs to get your phone reconnected, so always be aware of when your bill is due. Also, some providers will allow extensions if you call customer service ahead of time.
7. Avoid overages! This is the most important thing to remember. Don't go over your minutes or messages. Keep in mind how much minutes you have. Most providers offer free nights and weekends, so take advantage of those times.
